- Commercialization of Sweetpotato based silage: can women entrepreneurs compete favorably?Author(s): Mayanja, Sarah; Mudege, Netsayi; Kawarazuka, NozomiDate: 2017-12-04Type: ReportStatus: Open accessSweetpotato silage production has been proven to be a viable business, which women and men entrepreneurs can engage in, more so considering that women are already engaged in sweetpotato root production and piggery. Aside from addressing the post-harvest losses incurred from sweetpotato by-products, silage would also address the most economical challenge livestock farmers face, while also generating additional income for entrepreneurs. While a few women silage entrepreneurs had already been identified, in the RTB-ENDURE project it was not clear whether they could operate effectively and compete with male entrepreneurs successfully. Also, it was not clear whether other prospective women entrepreneurs could take up this business opportunity. This study sought to establish if there were gender based differences in the set up and operation of silage businesses, and whether these had an effect on the competitiveness of the business for men and women. Further, the study also sought to establish if there was an optimal client base with regards to projected demand and how entrepreneurs could position themselves to address the demand. The study was conducted in Masaka and Kamuli districts specifically in areas where the RTB-ENDURE project was implemented. A total of 215 individuals were interviewed.
- دراسة تقيّيم مشروع الباب : إدخال محصول البيقية في الدورة الزراعيةAuthor(s): Mazid, Ahmed; Makboul, Rafik (International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA))Date: 2000-04-29Type: Internal ReportStatus: Timeless limited accessبينت الدراسات التي أجريت في إيكاردا خلال الثمانيات أن ادخال زراعة المحاصيل البقولية العلفية في المناطق الجافة، ضمن النظم الزراعية القائمة على زراعة الشعير وتربية الماشية، يمكن أن تحل محل تبوير الأرض أو أن تستخدم في كسر دورة الشعير المستمرة.
- Assessment of the Introduction of Vetch in Crop Rotation in El-BabAuthor(s): Mazid, Ahmed; Makboul, Rafik (International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA))Date: 2000-04-29Type: Internal ReportStatus: Timeless limited accessPrevious studies conducted at ICARDA in the eighties showed the possibility of introducing forage legumes in the dry areas within the farming systems based on barley growing and animal production, where forage legumes may replace fallow in barley/ fallow rotation or break the continuous barley cultivation. The produce of the forage legume crop may be sold as a cash crop or used to feed the animals of rural families. The advantage for the proceeding cereal of planting forage legume is similar to that obtained by fallowing due to nitrogen fixation by legumes, also the stored moisture in the fallow year is little amount especially in the dry areas. Finally the forage legume can use the residual phosphorus added to the cereal crop which may wasted in the fallow year.

- Rural Livelihood Assessment in the Mountain Areas of YemenAuthor(s): Mazid, Ahmed; Aw-Hassan, Aden A.Date: 2004-01-30Type: Internal ReportStatus: Open accessPoverty is considered by several scientists and researchers as results of a set of natural and human factors, domestic policies and external factors that come together to create an environment conducive to the occurrence and spread of poverty and the increase in its severity. The Mountain Terraces Project (MTP) in Yemen has the aim of poverty reduction by improving rural livelihoods and increasing the chances of maintaining mountain terrace land. The overall objective of the research project is to development of decision-support tools, which could allow policy makers to understand farmers’ investment behavior and analyze the policy and institutional options that could assist in reversing terrace degradation, with a view to improving natural resource management, food security and income levels of rural households in the highlands of Yemen. The farming systems dominated in the Mountain Terraces in Yemen is “Highland Mixed Farming System”. This system is the most important in the NENA Region (FAO, 2001) in terms of population. There are two subsystems; one dominated by rainfed cereal and legumes plus tree crops on terraces, while the second is based on livestock on communally managed lands. Poverty is extensive, as markets are often distant, infrastructure is poorly developed and the degradation of natural resources is a serious problem. The project attempts to use community-based integrated natural resources management research approach, which involves the use of participatory research methods in problem identification and technology development, generation of direct benefits to farmers in a short time horizon and linking with development
