The "Multipurpose Drought-Tolerant Cactus Pear" poster highlights the adaptability and resilience of cactus pear in challenging environments with poor-quality soils. Serving as a valuable resource, this versatile plant yields both livestock fodder and human food, particularly crucial in water-scarce regions due to its high water content. Empowering low-income farmers and rural communities, cactus pear offers economic opportunities through diverse products. Beyond its utility, the plant contributes to environmental benefits such as erosion control, climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and wildlife habitat. The cultivation of cactus pear in arid regions addresses challenges posed by extreme conditions, providing a resilient and drought-tolerant crop option amidst limited resources. Progress includes significant plantations, optimized growth practices, and extensive training, especially among women. With growing recognition of additional benefits like erosion prevention and biofuel production, effective partnerships with local and international stakeholders are propelling progress. Immediate actions involve addressing the cochineal threat, cultivating resistant varieties, and resolving issues related to genetic resource exchange through the Nagoya Protocol.en_US
