The Syrian steppe is marked since the last fifty years by deep transformations in institutions, environment, and technologies, which have deeply affected the production strategies of the Syrian Bedouins. Between steppe and desert, the Badiah is submitted to high pressure due to the increasing number of sheep using the rangelands. ICARDA started in 2005 a research project in order to better understand the socio economical aspects of rangeland degradation. A survey was conducted from communities and households of the steppe. In this study we are interested to understand pastoral strategies followed nowadays by the Bedouins, focusing on mobility and feeding patterns. We identify five distinct type of herders that use raneglands in different ways. We then estimate in a multinomial logit the determinants of those strategic choices among a serie of household and community characteristics. The assets, the community pressure, the access to water, or the access to the cropping zone etc. are consistent and significant factors that explain the strategic choice followed by the households.en_US
