dc.description.abstractAleppo has been home to (CARDA and its staff since 1977. The mission of ICARDA is to promote agriculture in the harsh environments of dry areas, characterized by frequent drought. By increasing food production and protecting the natural resource base. 1CARDA's research program seeks to improve the quality of life and alleviate poverty. With a magical landscape. ancient civilization. fascinating markets. an imposing Citadel. unique mosque., and churches, and a warm and hospitable people. Aleppo is the second home for expatriate staff of ICARDA. currently representing 52 nationalities ICARDA is therefore pleased to present this book as a token of its gratitude to the people of Aleppo on the occasion of the City having been recognized as the Capital of Islamic Heritage and culture. This book is different from those published by ICARDA on growing crops; it is intended to be a gentle touch on the heart of the City that is ever-eager for advancement, love, and purity, In this ancient City, the stone art chants the anthems of glory and plays the music of civilization. It is the people of Aleppo who opened their arms to host ICARDA with generous hospitality and support. This humble token of gratitude from lCARDA brings together the gems of this glorious City. It is a reflection of the sense of originality and uniqueness of this City in the world of beauty. The book provides a vivid story of the rich history and culture of the City through pictures of the numerous quarters. mosques, churches. houses and other pieces of stone architecture. transformed by the skillful hands of the workers into a magnificent multicolor piece of art with full harmony. The architects and stonemasons have not only expressed dexterity and professionalism but also their ability to relate to different civilizations and cultures. Science is not separable from heritage. ICARDA is therefore privileged to share with the people of Aleppo the joy of the ongoing cultural celebrations for science leans on heritage and seeks to improve life through interaction with and lessons from history.en_US
