Ethiopia’s agrarian economy is marred with deep-rooted structural problems. Despite being considered to be the fastest growing economy in East Africa – at least based on official statistics, majority of its people live in poverty. In 2015, the World Bank estimated poverty headcount ratio at $1.90/day (2011 PPP) to be 30.8%. Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) has been estimating multidimensional poverty globally since 2010. The latest report by OPHI, in collaboration with United Nations Development Program (UNDP), shows that about 85% of Ethiopia’s population lives in rural areas and 92% of this population is multi-dimensionally poor (OPHI and UNDP, 2021).en_US
